What to Expect from da Vinci Robotic Surgery
The da Vinci surgery is an inpatient procedure that generally takes longer than traditional surgeries. Before the treatment commences, you will receive general anesthesia causing you to be unconscious during the treatment.
Once the anesthesia has been applied, usually no more than 2-4 small incisions will be made which are usually no more than 1/2 inch. During a da Vinci surgical procedure, your surgeon will be seated in the system console a few feet away from the operating table, looking into the vision system (which resembles a pair of binoculars) into the region of the body where the surgery is being performed. The vision system creates a three-dimensional view, with magnification up to 10 times what a surgeon might see with the naked eye. The system console is equipped with handles which control the robotic arms. It is the robotic arms that hold the surgical instruments, allowing for increased precision, removing risk of unsteadiness or shaking hands and minimizing surgeon fatigue. The surgery team makes the original incision, but thereafter, only the robotic device touches the patient, thereby minimizing risk of infection. Your surgeon retains 100% control of the da Vinci robot throughout your entire procedure.
Once the procedure is completed, all cuts will be repaired with stitches. Because the da Vinci robotic surgery is a minimally-invasive procedure, you can expect a relatively quick recovery time; however, hospital stays of 1-2 days can be expected following your da Vinci surgery.
