da Vinci Robotic Surgery in Hawthorne, NJ
The da Vinci surgical system is a method of surgery performed through tiny incisions using specialized very small instrumentation and robotic devices. It is much less invasive than traditional surgeries with reduced incidence of infection and fewer wound healing complications. There is less need for pain medicine, reduced scarring, less blood loss and faster recovery. The da Vinci system allows your surgeon to perform numerous surgical procedures with better vision, precision and overall control. Surgical treatments that lend themselves well to the da Vinci surgery system range from bariatric surgery to hysterectomies and prostate surgery.

da Vinci Robotic Surgery Procedures
The da Vinci surgical system can be used in lieu of traditional surgical methods in treating a variety of medical conditions, for the following types of procedures:
- Use of da Vinci surgery to remove excess articular cartilage in the knee, improve stability in the legs, remove loose debris and scar tissue in the hip joint, repair a labral tear or hip impingement and other orthopedic surgeries
- Colectomy and other colorectal surgeries
- Urological surgeries including a da Vinci robotic prostate surgery or prostatectomy
- Sacrocolpopexy to treat uterine and vaginal vault prolapse and other female urologic surgeries
- Gynecological surgeries including a da Vinci hysterectomy for benign and cancerous conditions
- Transoral robotic-assisted surgery (TORS) and other head and neck surgeries
- Lobectomy or other thoracic surgeries
- Cardiac bypass and other cardiac surgeries
The da Vinci surgery system cannot be used for total hip or knee replacements but can be used to treat conditions that delay the need for replacement surgery.
What to Expect from da Vinci Robotic Surgery
The da Vinci surgery is an inpatient procedure that generally takes longer than traditional surgeries. Before the treatment commences, you will receive general anesthesia causing you to be unconscious during the treatment.
Once the anesthesia has been applied, usually no more than 2-4 small incisions will be made which are usually no more than 1/2 inch. During a da Vinci surgical procedure, your surgeon will be seated in the system console a few feet away from the operating table, looking into the vision system (which resembles a pair of binoculars) into the region of the body where the surgery is being performed. The vision system creates a three-dimensional view, with magnification up to 10 times what a surgeon might see with the naked eye. The system console is equipped with handles which control the robotic arms. It is the robotic arms that hold the surgical instruments, allowing for increased precision, removing risk of unsteadiness or shaking hands and minimizing surgeon fatigue. The surgery team makes the original incision, but thereafter, only the robotic device touches the patient, thereby minimizing risk of infection. Your surgeon retains 100% control of the da Vinci robot throughout your entire procedure.
Once the procedure is completed, all cuts will be repaired with stitches. Because the da Vinci robotic surgery is a minimally-invasive procedure, you can expect a relatively quick recovery time; however, hospital stays of 1-2 days can be expected following your da Vinci surgery.
If you are at high-risk for traditional surgery or simply want to reduce your recovery time, scarring and risk of surgical complications, da Vinci robotic surgery can be a safe and effective way to treat your condition.
