What Are The Types of Radiology?

There are several types of radiology and several different tools that can be used to take images. An X-ray might be the most common type of radiologic imaging you are familiar with. Most people have had an X-ray at some point in their lives. Radiology may also use:

  • Fluoroscopy: Almost like an X-ray in real time, a continuous X-ray is sent through the body while healthcare providers examine moving parts. This type of radiology is used to place stents, visualize bones, look at organs or blood vessels, and more.
  • CT: Sometimes called a CAT scan, this machine takes cross-section pictures or “slices” of the body. CT scans can show the body with more clarity and greater detail than regular X-rays.
  • MRI: MRIs use radio waves and magnetic fields to produce pictures of organs and tissues in the body. MRI images may also be 3-D, and are most commonly used to visualize the brain and spinal cord.
  • Ultrasound : Uses high-frequency sound waves to produce a picture. Sometimes called a sonogram, ultrasound sends waves from a wand that bounce off the body's internal structures and send back an image.

All of these tools offer great benefit to the early identification of illness or disease and give healthcare leaders the tools to treat many conditions quickly and safely.
