Department of Transportation (DOT) Physicals in Waldwick, NJ

Federal law requires all commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers to receive regular physicals with a healthcare practitioner. These exams, referred to as DOT physicals, help CMV drivers to avoid many health conditions that arise from the many hours spent behind the wheel. DOT physicals have shown to reduce highway crashes and decrease the number of fatal injuries. Your healthcare provider will be assessing whether you can meet the physical and emotional demands of your job as well as any current or past health conditions which may hinder your ability to meet the demands of your job.

Preparing for a DOT Physical

Make sure to bring state-issued identification like a driver’s license or state ID. If you wear glasses, contact lenses or hearing aids, bring them with you to the physical exam. Also be sure to bring any waivers or exemptions you have received in regards to a health condition. You will be required to fill out your health history when you arrive and these items will help to ensure a streamlined physical examination.

Part of your physical will require you to fill out the medical history portion of the Medical Examination Report for Commercial Driver Fitness Determination. This form can be obtained ahead of time on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration website.

What Happens During my DOT Physical?

A DOT physical is similar to other physicals you have received throughout your life. You will have your pulse and blood pressure taken and your healthcare provider will also examine your eyes, throat, mouth and ears.

A vision test will be conducted to check your eye health and determine if you have at least 20/40 vision (contact lenses or glasses can be used). After this, your healthcare provider will check to make sure that you have no spine deformities or abdomen abnormalities that could make sitting for many hours unsafe for you.

Your healthcare provider will also ask you many questions about your general health including sleep habits, medication use and cognitive stability. A urine sample will be collected for urinalysis, checking for protein blood and glucose levels.

DOT Physical Costs

The cost of your DOT physical is dependent upon both your insurer and employer. Many employers will cover the cost of a DOT physical since it is required in order to perform your job duties. Prior to scheduling your physical, check with your employer to see if they cover the cost and if their doctor is required in order to receive cost coverage.

If the physical is not covered by your employer, your insurance may reimburse you. Insurance reimbursement is based on whether your provider views the DOT physical as preventable health care. You can contact your insurance provider ahead of time to check. You do not need insurance in order to receive the DOT physical.

DOT Physical Frequency

If you meet all of the standards outlined in the DOT physical requirements, a medical certificate will be issued for 2 years. If periodic monitoring is required for certain medical conditions, a medical certificate will be issued with a 3 month to 1 year expiration. You are required to receive DOT physicals for the length of time you are a CMV driver in order to remain compliant with federal law.
