Medicare Annual Wellness Visit in Jackson, MS
In 2011, the Affordable Care Act eliminated the cost of many preventive services offered by Medicare and introduced the Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) at no cost to you. The AWV is part of Medicare’s effort to keep people healthy rather than pay for more expensive interventions after serious illness arises.
Who is Eligible?
Are you enrolled in Medicare Part B? If so, you are eligible for an Annual Wellness Visit at no cost to you. Your first Medicare Annual Wellness Visit can be scheduled after 12 months of enrollment in Medicare Part B and each year thereafter.
You cannot schedule your initial Annual Wellness Visit in the first 12 months because Medicare offers first-year Part B enrollees a comprehensive Welcome to Medicare preventive visit (otherwise known as the Initial Preventive Physical Examination or IPPE) at no cost.
Your first Annual Wellness Visit can be scheduled no sooner than 11 months after your Welcome to Medicare visit.
All of these free preventive visits must be scheduled with physicians who accept Medicare Part B.
Understanding Your Medicare Annual Wellness Visit
The exam is basically a three-part process: COLLECT-ASSESS-COUNSEL.
Your healthcare provider will want to COLLECT information from you like your family medical history, any prescription medication or vitamins you take, and a list of your doctors and medical suppliers. You will be interviewed about physical and psychological issues, cognitive and physical impairments, risk factors, level of functioning and safety issues.
Your healthcare practitioner’s office will then ASSESS your current condition with a variety of routine measurements like height, weight and blood pressure.
The COUNSEL part of the process will involve developing a written screening schedule, with a checklist for the next 5-10 years, as well as a list of your risk factors and recommended interventions. Finally, you will be given instructions, advice and necessary referrals.
Your Medicare Annual Wellness Visit includes a Health Risk Assessment (HRA) and a personalized prevention plan that will be updated annually. These are working tools that can help you and your healthcare provider identify and take advantage of many of Medicare’s preventive services at no cost to you. If you change healthcare providers, let them know about your most recent AWV. Otherwise, they may unknowingly schedule your next one too soon, which may incur extra costs for you.
Preparing for your Medicare Annual Wellness Visit
Being prepared is one way to make sure your healthcare provider has the information he needs to get you the treatment and services you need. You should try to bring the following information with you to your Annual Wellness Visit:
- A list of all current medical providers and suppliers
- A list of all current prescription or over-the-counter medications you take, including vitamins
- Your medical history, including illnesses, hospital stays, surgeries, allergies, injuries and accidents, as well as major medical conditions of your parents, siblings, and children One note of caution: the Annual Wellness Visit is not a routine physical and does not include blood and urine tests or diagnostic tests like EKGs or MRIs. Your healthcare provider may order these tests if necessary, but they will be subject to your normal Part B co-pay and deductible and are not included in the free Annual Wellness visit.
