If you are seeking an adjustment of status, or are requesting a “V” nonimmigrant status, it may be required by law that you undergo an immigration physical. These medical examinations must be performed by a USCIS certified physician, also known as a civil surgeon.

What to Bring to Your Immigration Physical Exam
In order to prepare for your visit, you'll need to gather up certain information and paperwork. Some of this documentation includes:
- Photo ID: This could be a passport, driver's license, state ID, birth certificate, green card, or military ID card
- Medical and immunization records if available
- Your alien registration number if you have one
- Form I-693 completed to the best of your ability
Medical Exam for Immigration: What to Expect
The immigration physical will begin with a detailed discussion of your medical history. Your doctor can also help you complete any areas on Form I-693 that you may have questions about. Other steps of the immigration physical include:
- Physical exam
- Mental status evaluation
- Blood testing for syphilis, also known as an RPR test (rapid plasma reagin)
- TB (tuberculin) skin testing
- USCIS required immunizations
Before any vaccinations are administered, a blood test may be performed to determine what diseases you already have immunity to. Some of the illnesses tested for include:
- Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
- Varicella
- Polio
- Hepatitis B
- Tetanus
Once your examination has been completed, and all necessary vaccinations have been administered, you will receive a sealed envelope containing your I-693 form and any other medical records that are required. This envelope should be returned unopened to the Department Of Homeland Security and U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services.
